Google Merchant Center Disapproved Products: How to Fix Them

Where to Find Disapproval Reasons

In Merchant Center, navigate to Products then All Products. Click the Diagnostics tab. Filter by Issue to see all active disapprovals grouped by reason. Each disapproval shows how many products are affected and links to the relevant policy. Click any individual product to see its specific disapproval details. The diagnostic view is your primary tool for understanding and fixing disapprovals systematically.

Most Common Disapproval: Misrepresentation of Self or Product

This is the most serious disapproval category and can escalate to account suspension. It triggers when Google determines your product data does not accurately represent what is on your landing page. Common causes: price discrepancy between feed and landing page, product images that do not match the actual product, condition stated as "new" when landing page describes used or refurbished items. Fix: ensure your feed data and landing page are fully consistent, including current price including promotions, accurate images, and matching condition descriptions.

Missing Required Attribute

Many product categories require specific attributes. Electronics require GTIN (barcode). Apparel requires color, size, gender, and age group. If your feed omits a required attribute, products in that category are disapproved. Fix: identify which attributes are required for your product category by checking the Merchant Center product data specification for your vertical, then add those attributes to your feed.

Invalid Value for Attribute

Some attributes accept only specific values. The condition attribute accepts only "new," "refurbished," or "used." The availability attribute accepts "in_stock," "out_of_stock," or "preorder." Non-standard values (like "available" or "in stock" with a space) cause disapprovals. Fix: validate your feed against the Google product data specification and correct any non-conforming values.

Policy Violation: Dangerous Products

Certain product types are categorically restricted on Google Shopping: weapons, tobacco, adult content not submitted through the restricted program, counterfeit goods. If you sell a product that resembles a restricted category (a realistic-looking airsoft gun, an e-cigarette, a survival knife), check whether Google has classified it under a restricted category and what the submission requirements are.
