Google Merchant Center Dynamic Remarketing Setup

Dynamic remarketing lets you show personalized ads to people who visited your website, featuring the specific products they looked at. Instead of a generic brand ad, a visitor who viewed a blue running shoe sees an ad for that exact shoe. Conversion rates for dynamic remarketing consistently outperform standard display remarketing because the ads are relevant to what the visitor already showed interest in.

Prerequisites

You need a Google Ads account linked to your Merchant Center account, and the Google Ads global site tag (or Google Tag Manager) installed on your website. Your product feed must be active and approved in Merchant Center. The product IDs in your feed must exactly match the product IDs you pass in your website's event tags.

Step 1: Link Google Ads to Merchant Center

In Merchant Center, go to Settings, then Linked accounts. Add your Google Ads customer ID. Confirm the link in Google Ads under Tools, Linked accounts, Google Merchant Center.

Step 2: Set Up the Remarketing Tag

The Google Ads remarketing tag needs to pass product-specific data on product pages, cart pages, and purchase confirmation pages. The minimum data required is the event type (view_item, add_to_cart, purchase) and the product ID matching your Merchant Center feed. Install via Google Tag Manager for easier management.

Step 3: Create a Remarketing Audience

In Google Ads, go to Tools, Audience Manager. Create a new audience using website visitors. Segment by page URL or by the event tags you set up. Common segments include product viewers from the last 30 days, cart abandoners from the last 7 days, and past purchasers from the last 180 days.

Step 4: Create a Performance Max or Display Campaign

Dynamic remarketing works through Performance Max campaigns (which use your Merchant Center feed automatically) or through standard Display campaigns with the "Use dynamic ads" option enabled and your Merchant Center feed connected. Performance Max is recommended for most e-commerce accounts in 2026.
