Google Merchant Center Product Condition Policy
The Three Accepted Condition Values
Google Merchant Center accepts exactly three values for the condition attribute: new, refurbished, and used. These are the only valid values. Anything else (like "like new," "excellent," "grade A," or "open box") will cause feed errors. Map your internal condition descriptions to one of these three standardized values before submitting your feed.
When Condition Is Required
The condition attribute is required for products in the following categories: Electronics, Media, and any product that can logically exist in more than one condition state. For most apparel and consumable goods (items that are almost always sold new), condition is optional. When in doubt, include it. A missing required attribute is a feed error that can affect campaign serving.
Defining "Refurbished" Correctly
Refurbished means the product has been professionally restored to working condition and may have been previously used. This applies to certified refurbished electronics, professionally restored appliances, and similar items. It does not apply to "open box" items that were simply returned unopened or to items you tested briefly. Using "refurbished" for items that are effectively new can trigger a policy violation for misrepresentation.
Defining "Used" Correctly
Used means the product has been previously owned and used. For most marketplaces, this includes items sold through third-party seller programs. If you are a marketplace aggregating used goods, ensure your feed accurately reflects each item's condition, not a blanket condition for the entire catalog. Misclassifying used items as new is one of the most common causes of account suspension for misrepresentation.
Condition and Landing Page Consistency
Google checks whether the condition value in your feed matches the condition described on your landing page. If your feed says "new" but your product page says "refurbished" or shows photos of obviously used items, this triggers a misrepresentation flag. Ensure landing page content, images, and condition language all align with the feed attribute value.
